Tanvi Patri Makes History, Becomes First Indian Woman to Reach Youth Olympic Badminton Final
India's Tanvi Patri reaches the Youth Olympic Games badminton final after defeating Japan's Yuzuno Watanabe in Buenos Aires. The 15-year-old Odisha shuttler is now one victory away from a historic gold medal.
Tanvi had to overcome a strong challenge from Watanabe, who fought back to win the second game after losing the opener. However, the Indian maintained her composure in the deciding game and produced a series of attacking shots to secure the 21-14, 11-21, 21-19 victory.
The semifinal win also marked a measure of revenge for Tanvi, who had previously lost to Watanabe 21-14, 21-10 during their meeting in Thailand. This time, the Indian managed to turn the tables in a crucial encounter and secure her place in the final.
Before Tanvi, only three Indian shuttlers had reached the badminton semifinals at the Youth Olympic Games: HS Prannoy, Lakshya Sen and Aditya Joshi.
Prannoy won a silver medal at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore in 2010. Lakshya Sen also finished with a silver medal at the 2018 edition in Buenos Aires. Aditya Joshi, meanwhile, reached the boys' singles semifinals in 2014 but returned without a medal.
Tanvi has already established herself in junior badminton through her performances at the continental level. She previously won the girls' singles U-17 title at the Badminton Asia U-17 and U-15 Championships in Chengdu, becoming the first Indian shuttler to win both continental titles.
With her semifinal victory in Buenos Aires, the 15-year-old has now moved within one win of another major milestone. A victory in the final would earn Tanvi a Youth Olympic gold medal, adding to her growing list of achievements and marking another historic moment for Indian badminton.
